Dome Gorno-Altaisk
TASK
To build a dome pavilion for ski equipment rental.
We need to build and install a facility in winter conditions in one month.
2018
The city of Gorno-Altaisk, Republic of Altai
PROCESS
We delivered materials to the site and started installation. I assumed that we would finish them in 3-4 days. However, snowfall and gusty winds intervened: we had to increase the planned time to a week. Special equipment helped speed up the installation. A crane was working at the site. We worked in several shifts, including at night.
Podium
We installed a metal rapidly-erectable podium with insulation. The foundation's area was 151 square meters and the diameter was 14 meters. We used sheets of waterproof plywood to cover it. The foundation for such a podium is not required; the assembly was performed on an unprepared surface.
Frame
We assembled the geodome's frame. The frame structure's total weight was 1.4 tons.
Dome coverage
We insulated the dome with a non-flammable blanket. On the inside, there is a layer of protection against condensation. On the outside, the dome is covered with a thick washable material. It is almost impossible to tear, but easy to wash, which is important for surfaces that are in contact with sports equipment. The membrane's total weight was 230 kg.
Safety and comfort
The pavilion has two entrances. Firstly, it complies with fire safety rules. Secondly, visitors can move freely inside without crowding. Since the dome's walls are high, the entire internal area can be used as a useful space.
RESULT
The pavilion now houses a snowboard and ski rental shop for children and adults. Every day, hundreds of resort guests visit the dome. The facility can accommodate 150 people at a time.
The dome does not require labor-intensive maintenance. Snow loads in the region are high, but the hemisphere's shape eliminates this problem. Only the foundation's perimeter has to be cleaned. In addition, long vestibules protect the entrances from snowdrifts.
The facility proved itself to be reliable after the first winter season!
